NEOMIR ESA space mission project: Hunting Asteroids near the Sun.
Announcement
We are organising a scientific workshop aimed at engaging the science community in preparation for the ESA NEOMIR mission. The workshop will focus on the discovery and characterisation of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) observable close to the Sun, a population that remains largely unexplored but is critical for planetary-defense efforts.
The meeting will bring together experts in observations, modeling, and survey design to discuss the physical and observational challenges associated with detecting small NEOs from space-based platforms, particularly from the Sun–Earth L1 region.
Topics will include:
- Detection techniques of NEOs with space telescopes
- Thermal background and zodiacal-light modelling at low solar elongations
- Thermophysical models of decametre-size NEAs observed near the Sun
- Delectability and survey performance of small NEOs from L1
- Reconstruction of impact trajectories, precovery and ground-base follow-up
-
The workshop is intended to foster collaboration, identify key science requirements, and strengthen community involvement in the scientific preparation of NEOMIR.
